As a follower of Jesus Christ, the polarizing influence of politics combined with nefarious reporting of news media can quickly become overwhelming and confusing for many people. However, as a Christian and pastor, I want to urge every Christian in America to become more active in our politics, both in your prayers and in your participation. We must all pray because the decisions of our elected officials affect not only this generation but future generations positively or adversely, especially our freedom of religion. And, in participation, because a silent citizen has no power and no right to complain about the state of our nation.
Over the last three presidential elections, many have asked me about my stance on each election. They ask me, knowing that I am a devout follower of Jesus Christ, a pastor, a first-generation American from legal immigrants from Southeast Asia, and a proud citizen of the United States. My answer has always been that I stand with Jesus and vote, not according to party lines but by the Holy Spirit and according to biblical values and standards.
As believers, our devotion should never be to a party (republican or democrat) but to our King, the King of kings, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Our allegiance should never be to a nation, a flag, nationality, or race, but to Christ alone, committing to following Him, representing Him, and standing for His values as He has dictated in the Bible in all we do.
As our nation prepares for the upcoming presidential elections, be cautious not to get bewitched by the political spirit, which is always on the prowl. It’s a lying and deceiving spirit who seeks to kill, steal, and destroy our nation through division. Its aim is to divide, conquer, and enslave our nation through false narratives, fear, and flashing lights, appealing to our flesh and our emotions, both of which are at war with the Holy Spirit. We are called to be people who are called to be led by the Spirit of God.
Those who tolerate everything stand for nothing. And those who stand for nothing forfeit their right to complain.
